A guest in the magnificent Abbaye-Chateau de Camon

This little gem is tucked away in the hilly countryside just outside the traditional village of Camon, not far from the famous town of Carcassonne and the ruin castle of Montsegur, and is a true oasis of peace where silence and the beauty of the chateau takes your breath away and where you are a few centuries back in time.

Once you have passed the impressive driveway and drove through the large sandstone gate uphill the yard, you’ll immediately be welcomed by the hospitable couple Peter and Katie, a former hotel owner from the UK Lake District and an interior designer who has grew up in South Africa. Once inside you’ll discover that the residents has left the ancient charisma of the building intact but have arranged it in a way that it is provided of the contemporary comforts.

Peter and Katie are the owners of the Abbaye-Chateau de Camon since 2004, originally a Benedictine monastery, the oldest part of the building dates from the year 952!

When they discovered the beautiful chateau, it was in good condition to a large extent, thanks to the previous owners who have carried out a lot of work and renovations. This allowed the residents to focus on the design of the interior, which Katie did with passion.

The result is very successful, each room is unique. In the main salon, the walls hung with huge original tapestries showing scenes of hunting and the main chateaux near Camon. The beautiful blue color in the tapestries is in perfect harmony with the classic furniture, making the room looks calm in all its splendor. Ultimately, it is the dream of the residents to replace all the current furniture with antique furniture.

Other amazing places in the chateau are the circular stone staircase with carved large wide steps that previously was required for the burros to be able to walk to the top. The “Saumon” room where everything has one particular pattern and color, the original hunting kitchen and the magical courtyard where guests can enjoy their breakfast.

Also note the old terracotta floor tiles dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, if you look closely you can still see chickens, dogs and cats printings in the tiles!

Already curious? Be a guest of the magnificent Abbaye-Chateau de Camon and experience the beauty and tranquility of this historic building surrounded in the beautiful countryside at the base of the Pyrenees!
